After serving in the Pacific Theatre of Operation with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, Steve received his BS Degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and his Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University, NY. He returned to Columbia to work on his Doctorate Degree in General Semantics.
Steve has taught at all grade levels from Kindergarten through the University. He served as Principal of the Los Angeles County Juvenile Hall For Juvenile Delinquency Rehabilitation; Director of Education at the UW sponsored Camp McCoy Men’s Urban Job Corps Center, Associate Director of Rural Family Development Project with the University of Wisconsin Extension, and the Director of the Neenah Research and Demonstration Project. Steve retired as a Superintendent of Schools.
After being discharged from the Air Corps in 1945, he pursued art as a profession as well as a form of expression. In his own words, he reflects: “To me, it was art that most clearly objectified my thoughts and feelings in a way that words could not.” |

The responsibilities of marriage and children required a more realistic assessment of his economic potential. His brushes and paints were packed away for a more secure and remunerative pursuit, educational administration.
After 34 years in education, teaching at all levels and being part of federal initiatives to advance and innovate educational opportunities, Steve retired and proceeded to unpack his paints and brushes, Returning to his center, he painted prolifically in the 1980s and 1990’s, taking on themes of architecture, local rural scenes, and botanical still life.
He sees himself as a storyteller and has always painted for his own pleasure, generously giving his works as gifts to friends and organizations. Using high contrast to capture the mood of a place, experience, or object. He intends to describe the scene in rich detail to record history or just a moment in time. |
